The card ran out of buffer during video recording on my Canon 6d. My lower format cameras, 60d and 7d don't have an issue with the card, but the 6d will not record longer than 8 seconds. Photo's take just fine, it's not built for video though.

Is it a portable hard drive?

Do you have to plug it in and have access to an outlet to retrieve the storage saved on a hard drive? Can I take it wherever i go, or does it have to be connected to an outlet at all times?
It needs to have the power plug plugged in to operate. You can use a power inverter to turn a car cigarette lighter plug into 110v current. Otherwise you need an outlet.

Is this compatible with mac laptops?

It works great with my MacBook Pro retina. Should be fine with yours, but you may need to use disk utility to format it first.

can this be used for an iPad

It can be used for an iPad if it is connected to your router. I created an airport with mine and I can drop files from my iPad and iPhone with my home network.

Will the Pixtor SDHC Memor Card 32GB record music

The card will record music, so long as it fits in your recorder. If it takes a micro-sd card, it won't work. I use it in my Tascam dr-40 and it works great.
