First of all, Best Buy doesn't list all the tech specs on any item, which I don't understand. They give you limited information on the items they sell. Item description left out a few key elements that I think people should know.
-Performance in best buy demo will never be fast. People futz with it all day, drivers are not up to date, its usually at factory "balanced power" mode.
- Description says i7 in store, neglects (and 'sales' kids) think it's a quad core cause it says i7, but its a dual core, 2 cores - 4 threads with the other half of the chip taking up the onboard Intel GPU. BIG difference. Multicore processing is needed in Audio/video work, or Virtual Machines, multi tasking.
-5400rpm drive, sure its a 1TB, but its got the latency that's through the roof. Sure it's SATAIII, but r/w response times are super slow.

- Nvidia 840/ Intel graphics, - in comparison the 850 has roughly 25% more raw power than the 840. The 840 will push most modern games at 720p res, medium quality settings, at roughly 30-45fps. Low fps at medium quality with 1080p res. This wouldn't be a problem but windows 8 will scale in game res changes within the desktop res. Which means - big black bars around your smaller res gaming, unless you change the desktop size first. Let's not forget to mention that its a 840 running at 4x pcie. For gaming, this is sort of an issue. the jump from 4x to 8x is major.
If you are a gamer (this would work for a budget build) look for a 900 series card in a laptop, like the ASUS ROG series laptops.

Don't believe nvidia website, manually put in your card model and update the driver. Nvidia auto detect said that asus was the only driver i could install on this system. Far from the truth. Running latest drivers, and no issues. Highly recommended.
Tested games - Borderlands Prequel, BF4, L4D2, Mass Effect 3, Batman: Origins, Titanfall, 3dmark, pcmark, CoD: Advanced Warfare, Diablo 3, dead space 3, kerbal space program, star citizen, dirt 3.

There is also a setting in the nvidia control panel that lets your set a preferred gpu for applications in this laptop. If you have Intel set at the primary, then expect less graphics performance.
This is due to the processors lack of pcie lanes. Again, unfortunately, most of the Best Buy staff could not answer my questions about tech info, as they were not supplied with detailed spec sheets.
Best Buy should be selling a few higher end systems with 900 series nvidia or 290x amd gpus. Everyone else online is, if you like online shopping.
8 Gigs or ram, well - up to a gig of ram will get used for intels HD graphics shared memory. so its more like 7 for user access. If that's not enough for you, you can go to 12. There is one user accessible slot if you take the backplate off. (be sure to have the right hex head for the screws. Also,it only takes low voltage ddr3 (1.35v) ram, single 8gig stick.
Beaware most BEST BUY stores DO NOT CARRY LOW VOLTAGE RAM IN STORE. Had to return a upgrade purchase after trying to install standard ddr3 1.5v I bought at a best buy. Again, if there was a physical owners manual shipped with the unit, I would have read it. I would have settled for a pdf on a DVD since it came with a dvd rw. Last time I don't find a pdf online, thank you ASUS

No 8.1 restore cd, download asus backtracker to download the recovery partition to a USB thumb drive. 8.1 oem keys will not work with retail discs. so do it before your 5400rpm hdd fails.
Wireless is spotty reception. If I pop the bottom cover off, its great. That says a few things about the design...
Mousepad drivers were weird out of box, updated and were fine after.

All ports work fine. Tablet mode is great, disables keyboard in that mode.

DVD-RW - Ok, thats nice I guess, but since it didn't include any recovery or driver discs, what is the point? If it's to show off screen, why not stick a bluray in it Or give us a second hard drive by default?
Asus backtracker only uses thumbdrives. So recovery creation is out of the bag for dvd. It's a nice 1080p screen, and bluray quality looks great on it.
Think about getting a bluray aftermarket to install in this, its easy to take backplate off and swap ODD.

Power button by volume buttons, - disable this button in power settings, you might hit it when searching for buttons in dark.
Disable Metro, enable desktop mode at startup, windows key on side of notebook won't be so annoying then.
Power Brick - It's just a mess! What was ASUS thinking! get a small extension cord or universal power supply. Buy this laptop and you will see! It goes against all standard power brick designs and logic, except if you are apple. It's heavy enough that it usually will fall off the wall socket. Just you wait.
A little sub woofer! how cute. I like this thing. - be sure to change the audio profile in software to get some more volume out of the little speakers in the case. Audio is fine by me. Headphone/mic port is a single port. adapter might be needed for you.
Now, after ordering a SSD, second Hybrid HDD (with caddy) to mount in Optical drive bay, upgrading the ram to 12 gigs. Buying a usb3 to 7+5 pin sata cable for the optical drive for external use (bluray) Tweaking the power settings, updating all drivers, breaking in 8.1 nasty features, and updating bios - This laptop is starting to run like a haswell cpu should.
Oh yeah, it runs very cool, but haswells are designed to do so.
You can say that I am picky, but these are important things that you should know about this product. Half of specs should have been on the label at the store.
To Best Buy - I don't know about other people but, I go to your store, because I like to get the items I buy immediately instead of waiting for online stores. I like to look at the quality of the item in your store. I expect you to want to sell me that item, and know as much as you can about that item you are selling. It's always hit or miss with your staff and items, please step up your game.
I'd recommend this laptop to any college level person, and someone who does casual gaming, but this is Not a comparable mobile unit to any high end desktop board. Be prepared to fuss with some settings.
If you are a huge multitask-er and running loads of processor intensive work, this is not what I would recommend. A quad core would be more suited your needs.
Basic Photoshop user, calibrate your screen, and take advantage of some of the cuda cores.

How easy is it to replace the hard drive?
Torque screws, real small ones, and a phillips on the inside. I did it, its not bad, just get a nice set of precision tools and you will be ok.

Battery life is not listed anywhere.
im getting 2.5 hours on balanced power mode. 1.5 on high performance. not bad for a 11 volt battery.

Is this Windows 7 compatible?
I would like to upgrade it to Windows 7 because my son is having a hard time navigating and some of his games does not run in windows 8.1 compared to his windows 7 laptop.

if you plan to put windows 7 on it, get a 16 gig thumb drive and download from ASUS "Backtracker" and run the recovery backup disc. its the only way you will be able to put the OEM 8.1 back on the computer that came with it, if you decide to go back to windows 8.1.
If 8.1 is getting back, try getting the start menu back with a program called "classic Shell". It makes windows 8.1 look like 7.
Any application having issues with windows 8.1 should right click on application, and choose properties. In the window that opens up, there is a tab labeled "Compatibility", select a windows version that worked for that program originally and hit 'ok'. Run the program, and with some luck, it might run.

Is it possible to replace the CPU or Gpu?
I was just wondering if the computer ends up being to slow for gaming if it is possible to replace the processor or graphics card. Thanks
CPu is soldered right to board, as most low profile cpus are now. same with gpu. Not able to upgrade those.
