I like this vacuum so much better than the $500 Oreck I previously was using, which wasn't designed to be specifically for pet hairs. This vac really picks up the hair well and keeps the dust and emissions down. Plus the enclosed attachments are so handy! The only drawback for me is the weight (over 8lbs), simply because i suffer with arthritis terribly.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What is the plastic item near the top of the vacuum handle with the yellow insides?

The yellow item you refer to may be the inside of the (Clear) attachment that hooks on the front. It is a rotating-roller brush attachment to use on furniture, stairs, etc. This can be connected to the hose and wand attachments to clean blind and drapes also. A great tool !!
