I really loved the way this media player looked but was sad to find out it does not support the TWC App.

Compared to my Roku 3 this Roku stick is freezing a lot. I never had this problem with the Roku 3. Also, the navigation was very slow compared to the Roku 3.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Does the subwoofer simply stay on all the time, or does it need to be turned on too?

Sub stays on or wakes itself up automatically without any problems.

Is it compatible with a SamsungTV?

Yes, it will know your Samsung TV remote volume code and you then just set your TV to external speaker mode.
