This TV stand fits perfectly in my living room and adds a contemporary look. I put it together myself. Although it might have been a little easier putting the glass shelves on with another person. Currently, I have a 36 inch TV and I was able to put it on the mount with no problem. This stand can handle a much larger TV (which I plan on purchasing at a later date). I like that the TV can rotate from side to side so I can see the screen when I am working in the kitchen. The shelves hold all my electronics.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Does the mount attach to the wall only or to both the wall as well as the tv?

Mounts to either the wall or the tv stand. I have mine mounted to the tv stand.

what is the usable distance between shelves?

and what is the weight limit for the top, middle, and bottom shelves?
I have an Onkyo receiver that weighs close to 40lbs and is a little over 7.8" tall and want to be sure it will fit

The manual says the total weight limit for the middle shelf is 50 pounds and the bottom shelf is 75 pounds. I would definitely put the heaviest items on the bottom shelf. The distance between the shelves is a little more than 9 1/2 inches.

The manual doesn't specifically list a weight limit for the top shelf but says the tv should not weigh more than 125 pounds.

How many pounds can the mount hold if you attach it to the stand?

Does it work for the LCD TV's from about 2010? They are a little thicker and heavier than the current TV's. I want to use it for a 32".
I purchased my 36 inch TV in December 2009 and it fit just fine.
