What's not so great: Function Keys need to have FN key pressed for the Function to work
Essential for business use... the onscrean keyboard is OK but just doesn't get it done for serious business applications. The only thing I don't like is that the Function keys are secondary, and the wondows 8 specific functions are the primary focus for those keys. I use software that requires heavy use of the F1 thru F12 keys and sometimes pressing and holding the Fn key slows production.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Signing documents/contracts is easy... your entire office in one hand.
What's not so great: Stylus attaches to outside instead of internal sleave, stylus is irritatingly inaccurate, poor camera, grainy pictures
This is great for business, I can generate a document, have the client sign it and send it off for processing all without printing and within minutes. it has my full office suite on it and, though it doesn't like it, will accept Google Chrome and other third party software.
The stylus really needs work when you calibrate it it works just fine for about 2 minutes. I have had the stylus be off by over half an inch at times this is frustrating to the extreme given the small size of the screen.
The camera is horrible Microsoft has taken 2013 technology and shoved a 1980s pixelated camera into it.
That being that being said if you spend the ungodly amount of hundred thirty dollars for the keyboard most of the problems can be taken care of except for of course the camera... thank the Lord for the high quality cameras in almost all of our cell phones.
This product is... responsive touch screen, easy to set up, lightning fast, Perfect for Business, A nice compact size, Sharp graphics, Easy to navigate, Comfortable to hold

Surface Pro - CD/DVD Player/Burner
Can an external CD/DVD Player/Burner be used? Does it have to have its own power source or will the USB handle it? What software is used to manage the external drive, play music, play DVD's, burn CD's, etc.?
You can use a USB optical drive with the Microsoft Surface with no additional software required... just plug it into the USB port and wait a couple seconds for windows to recognize it. Its that simple. As for multimedia (music/movies) you can use windows media player to view them or download something else like VLC media player but the Microsoft Surface comes pre-loaded with a media player.
