Two Monitors?

What do I need to look for in order to use two monitors?
I could find nothing on this. I chanced a HDMI to DVI-D cable and hooked up two HP S2031 wide screen 20" monitors, one to the HDMI port and one to VGA. Worked flawlessly. I set the HDMI to primary but see very little difference between the two.
