Will it stream youtube without problems?
Roku 1 will work great with Youtube! Add the Youtube to your home screen and you will stream youtube content without any problems. Enjoy!

how do I eliminate broken image Roku reception?

Lately, when I use my Roku, the screen image is a pixelated mosaic & not a coherent picture.
I would check the output power of your WIFI modem. If your modem is provided by your cable or satellite provider, I would contact that provider and question them about your modem reception. Also, try turning the power off on your modem and then unplugging your WIFI modem for about 2 minutes to allow it to reset and then plug it back in and turn the modem on again. This may possibly solve your problem. It is worth it to give it a try. If not, contact provider for assistance.

Should I purchase an HDMI cable even though Roku 1 comes with the AV cable?

Will using the HDMI cable improve the streaming quality or not?
If your TV has an HDMI input, you should consider purchasing the ROKU for an HDMI connection and purchase an HDMI cable. The HDMI cable will allow your TV to broadcast 1080i high definition picture quality if the program is being broadcast in that picture mode. If you don't have an HDMI input on your TV, consider purchasing the ROKU with AV cable. You will not receive 1080i high definition picture with that cable. That will be standard 420p on your TV.

Do I need to connect it to a laptop or only plug into my older tv? Looks like it when I read the answers above!? Sorta confused??
Just simply connect two wires to your TV. If your TV has an HDMI input connect the HDMI wire from your streamer box to the TV. If your TV does not have an HDMI input, then purchase the streamer box with the RCA type wires (Red,White and Yellow cables) and connect those wires from the output of your streamer box to the input of your TV. This connection is color coded accordingly. The second wire is of course your electrical cord plug going out from your streamer box to your electric plug input. You are then ready to enjoy fantastic viewing of streaming programming.

You do not need a laptop but you will need a WIFI connection modem provided by your cable or satellite provider.
