smart tv or tv with hdmi port for streaming movies,etc

i cannot figure out what the best choice for me would be.i want to stream movies and tv shows on my tv, without interrupting computer use. if i get a smart tv, do i still have to connect to computer? or get a second internet connection and plug directly into the connection- but i have the broadband that connects the computer with a phone jack.
A Smart TV should operate as a stand alone unit without a computer. The advantage of a Smart TV is to allow hook-up by Wifi so as to eliminate any secondary device being necessary.
