Coming from Google TV this was definitely an upgrade. My 6 and 8 year old love playing android games on the TV now. I opted not to buy the official Nexus Player controllers ($40 a piece) and instead bought two controllers from GameStop that work great and were only $8. Goody and should only get better.

Great product. A bit niche but if you know what it does before going into it you'll be pleased. Easily gives me a full day out of the charge and that's pretty good considering I use it to control playback while teaching. Just know it's primary use is to push notifications from your phone and act as a controller for your connected device.

Can this connect to shared files on a network?

I have an external hard drive connected to my network, as well as files on my desktop i would like to play through the Chromecast. Can the device connect to these shared folders on the network to play these files?
I do this at my home. The easiest way I have found is to install a program called Plex Media Server (https://plex.tv/downloads). This will scan the folders you tell it to and find cover art and show them in a Netflix style. It works really well. You then have to purchase the Plex app on a device or use the free interface on the browser. Chromecast is built in. An added benefit is you can add "channels" to your Plex server like ABC, CBS, HGTV, etc, and it the program will pull content from their websites and organize it in the same fashion. It isn't live programming but it works kind of like a DVR. I subscribe to Hulu+ which doesn't have CBS programming and that is how I keep up with The Big Bang Theory. I attached some screenshots of the channels feature and how my home movies show up. Hope this helps!

Does it work with SlingBox.

Looks like it will work.

Dish Network

I can watch Dish Network on my iPad via my home Wifi. Will I be able to stream it to a tv?
I don't believe it will. The Dish app doesn't support a direct chromecast button and the iPad cannot mirror it's screen to a chromecast. If you have access to a computer you can go to Dish Anywhere in the Chrome Browser and cast that tab to the chromecast. I use it in my classroom to show videos from websites that don't have that chromecast button and it works really well.
