With large HDs in notebooks, it is no longer practical to do backups to CD's or DVD's. The use of USB connected portable small footprint large hard drives is the best practical solution. Clouds are impractical for anything other than some files, so a complete restorable backup with a good branded software solution is the answer.

I need to replace the hard drive on an HP M9340F KQ497AA ABA desktop computer.

Is the current product a valid replacement for ST3750630AS. Will I be required to make changes to the motherboard or firmware or anything else?

Yes. Just make sure that your backup software supports restoring to a different drive and includes the "hidden" partition which contains your operating system. Most good software will allow you to "mirror" from one drive to another for replacement purposes. Suggest looking at O&O Software but other might work well also. Quicker than making a back up using HP's software and restoring to a different drive.

I have used multiple USB ports to plug the hard drive into my Dell computer and it doesn't show up anywhere.
What should I be doing?

Not knowing which computer you have, I suspect that you are attaching via an older USB 2.0 port, and will need to device driver to make this drive work. That should be available from the support section of the Seagate site.

I have 2 PCs to backup. Can I use one Seagate eternal drive with 2 PCs?

Backups are named files, so possible. Just need enough room for both times maybe two backups each.

Can you backup OS files and two computers with different Windows OS.

I have a desktop running Windows 8.1 and a laptop running Windows 7. Will this drive backup the system files as well as my personal data on both computers and how does it differentiate between the two computers? Can I use this drive to transfer files between the two computers?

Possible but a disaster waiting to happen. Would need to purchase 2 backup software packages, or multi-license (like O&O) to make the backup compatible with both OS. Then carefully name your backups to i.d. later.

USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0

Can I use this as a working external hardrive?

I am a CPA and have multiple companies QuickBooks Enterprise files saved in a Dropbox Folder which I work off of. I want to transfer my "working" copies of QuickBooks Enterprise to WD Passport and back up to DropBox but don't know if the WD works as an extended hard drive that I can work off of and it is saved in real time rather than having to start a back up process after I am finished with each company file. Please let me know.

Sounds to me you are looking for a NAS hard drive, which this is not.

How can I transfer data from my old computer via passport to my new laptop?

A very lengthy process, depending on what you call files. There are your Documents, Pictures, Videos, Email export of Contacts, and then depending on how organized you are, anywhere else you put things on the computer that you want to save. You could do a simple copy of the files to the passport, or you could use a backup software like O&O that allows a backup and then a file restore of selected files from the backup. At least that way, you have everything in case you miss something and want it later. Just be aware of things you will have to create, like the export of Contacts to a file.

my modem is about 75 ft away from my visio smart hd tv and 3 walls away. will this help it connect

As long as signal received from wireless router at extender location was sufficient to boost and rebroadcast.

What to buy

Should i replace my old NETGEAR router with a new one or would the range extender be sufficient to improve my internet connection? I keep losing the connection and my cable co. suggested that i get a new router.

Replacing router would probably not do much, except some new ones are dual band for devices that support that. This would help with signal.

the internet is hooked in the garage and up stairs has only 3 signals even down stairs living room has 3 to 4 signals and I was wondering, would this work with Motorola - SURFboard eXtreme DOCSIS 3.0 Wireless-N Cable Modem and Gigabit Router? I have comcast as the isp.

Yes. You would need to experiment with inside location so that all locations have full signal strength.
