What's great about it: Pricing, Easy to Use, Picture Quality same as Canon T2i, More Built Quality & not a Plastic Feel, Awsome in camera Edit
What's not so great: tend to over-expose in bright scenery on auto-mode, Night Time pictures takes some time to master unless u use flash
This camera is Fantastic! You might have to practice and get use to Night Time Photo's as the Automatic Setting will OVER-EXPOSE your night pictures. Other then that it is great.
I was debating between the Canon T2i $800 or Nikon D3100 ($600). I ended up with Nikon D3100 because you get the same Picture Quality & it does come with the 1080p HD Video w/ Full Focus. The full focus however is not as great as Nikon describe. But Video is not the main thing for me, I like Nikon for its picture Quality. Although Canon T2i has 18MP. Megapixel isn't much of a big deal unless your going to CROP a bunch.
So to conclude my review on Nikon D3100. Its so far the best DSLR I have used, Wonderful pictures. But remember if you want that SHARP & Crispy pix, you should always shoot in RAW. Thats what i do. but if you dont got time the AUTO setting does a great job also. can't go wrong with the price range
I would recommend this to a friend!

Is manual focus achieved by rotating the lens ring by hand, or is it motorized through use of "up/down" buttons?

Lens Ring. All lens are manually focused that way

3100 vs 5000

Other than MP n screen size. What's the big difference? Want for sports. Can u use live view in sports?
3fps per sec is decent, not the fastest. if your mainly shooting sports i would look into a Faster Shutter Speed camera such as the Sony 33 or 55. They have super fast shutter speeds for under 1000k$$ which is rare to see.

How do you increase ISO sensitivity beyond 3200?

Unless the camera comes with a Boost then your really stuck, it should be in the ISO Setting menu on your DSLR
