My TiVo worked out better then I had hoped it would. I have had this box since March of 2014. I bought it when I canceled my cable service and opted for over the air free TV. I still wanted to be able to record shows and not rely on a VCR. I purchased 2 boxes (1 box each for 2 different TV's) and an HD roof antenna. The boxes were easy to set up and program. The search function captured ALL over the air channels and since it is connected through WiFi was able to download all show info and guides. The only thing that did not work out was since my WiFi is not strong enough, the boxes were not able to connect to each other to share shows between different TV's. I solved this by hard wiring them together using an Ethernet cord. This was my Wifi's issue and not TiVo so I wont ding them for it.
Overall I have been very happy with both boxes and recommend this to anyone looking to drop cable and have access to a good over the air signal.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Romio picture/sound quality when used to tune tv channels

How does the Romio Tuner output quality compare to a $13 per-month fee (Time-Warner ) digital converter box ?
As long as you have a clear signal coming into the box, you should be very happy with the picture coming out of it. I have an HD roof antenna that I purchased from Home Depot for $140 at the same time I bought my TiVo boxes. I have been VERY happy with the picture and the signal strength from Chicago. Keep in mind, TiVo does charge a $16 monthly fee for it's service so you will not escape monthly fees by switching to TiVo.

does the roamio come with smart features already installed

Yes. You will have access to Netflix, Hulo Plus, and several other movie / TV show providers as well as Pandora music. You WILL need to have an active account with each service or you can register for one through the TiVo.
