What's great about it: Works as advertised
What's not so great: Funky box look
I have xFinity and was looking for a solution where I can watch shows recorded by the DVR downstairs and cable in general upstairs. Also, I was intrigued by the prospect of watching my home cable anywhere in the world. I didn't want to purchase another DVR and shell out $19 in monthly rental fees. So, I came upon Slingbox 500. At first I was very skeptical but decided to give it a try. I also needed a media player that would play Slingbox stream and found that WD TV Live does in fact play it.
The setup was somewhat easy as I pretty much figured out the wiring process going from DVR to Slingbox and then from Slingbox to TV. The Slingbox was set up next to our DVR downstairs. It immediately found my home Wi-Fi, I connected to it, then it took another 10 minutes to update the box firmware. It asked me about my current cable provider, my zipcode and the make and model of my DVR and that was that.
Keep in mind that you need to create an online account with Slingbox website. This way it knows how to find your Slingbox on the internet and in case you have set up more than one, it gives you a list of available devices.
Then, I set up WD TV Live upstairs to my bedroom TV. It asked me for my Slingbox login and magically it worked.
Now, I can watch my DVD downstairs upstairs in our bedroom in HD perfectly streaming.
What I was not happy about is in order to watch Slingbox on your mobile device, they charge you $15 for each while streaming to a laptop/desktop is free.
But it really works. We recently went to Mexico and 99% of the channels are in Spanish which I do not speak. I had my phone hooked up to a room TV thru its HDMI input using room Wi-Fi at about 1Mbs and it worked flawlessly, giving me my home channels in Mexico.
This is a wonderful device that works as advertised.

Yes, you pay $15 for the software on iTunes.

Does the Slingbox 500 come with the needed software for my MAC and / or PC?

I am unclear if I must also buy software (an added expense). Please advise, thanks.
You create an account with Slingbox website and it plays on computers at no cost. Otherwise, it's $15 for Android device or iPad.

When you use your sling box, does it change the channel on the TV that the sling box is being used on as well?

Yes, it flips channels on your DVR, not TV.

Will my Michigan based Sling box work on a PC in Canada?

If I have a sling box hooked up to my cable box in Michigan and I want to watch it through a TV hooked to a PC when I visit Canada will it work? Some internet sites are not available in Canada, example Hulu.
Yes, it does not know borders. Remember, you are watching a digital stream of your home cable.

Can I order and view an on-demand movie connected to a DirectTV receiver?

I plan to connect Sling to my home's DirectTV receiver box and view DirecTV at a weekend place. If I do that, will I be able to order DirecTV on-demand movies and watch them from the remote location?
Yes. Think of Slingbox is just a window thru which you watch your home channels.

Are you talking about more than one location? Only one location can watch it at a time.

How is the quality of the picture/sound?

Quality and sound are both terrific but it depends on your internet connection. In my tests you need between 1-3mbs internet connection line to guarantee top HD quality and sound.

one sling box- 2 different viewing locations

I want to be clear before I buy-- If I buy the sling box and set it up in my home...can my 2 college sons watch the same local show at their colleges located in 2 different states? Please don't tell me I have to buy 2 boxes......I don't mind 2 subscriptions.....just let me know in layman's terms how to go about it
No 2 people can watch at the same time. You would have to purchase another Slingbox and attach it to another setup box in your home.
