We lost our previous AC router, also from Asus, to a lightning strike (along with our cable modem, set-top box and BluRay player). The last one was certainly a 5, so with a new, up-to-date modem and a new Asus AC router, I had high expectations. On several dimensions, like ease of setup, range, and durability of connection once established, this router delivers, so I can't rate it lower than 4. But . . . when modem and router are turned on--after being unplugged for another lightning storm--the wi-fi comes up but our devices tell us we are not connected to the Internet. To fix this, I have to go back and turn the router off, and then turn it on again. That's a hassle. I need things that work the first time when you turn them on. This happens every single time. Also, the on/off switch feels a bit fragile--I am afraid it won't be long before it breaks. So I'm disappointed, but partly because our previous Asus router was so completely great.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Was looking for something to get a stronger spread of signal throughout our jumbled layout, and, with the help of an Asus signal repeater, on to some outbuildings at least 50 yards away. The previous "super extensive range" dual band / AC router came up short--sometimes had to carry a laptop into the next room to join the wireless network, and my smart TV / smart DVR player connections were hit and miss.
Not any more! Reliable connections throughout the house and (with the signal repeater) all the way to the barn (though the Internet gets slower out there. No more having to go visit the router to make a connection.
Very easy to set up--you really CAN do this yourself, in a few minutes, if you have your cable modem set up. No wrinkles, no need to contact support.
Yes, it's expensive--way more than I've ever paid for a router--but it solved the problem, and made me the hero in my household (for a while, anyway).
The one thing I still don't get is the excitement over 5G. The signal is substantially weaker than the 2.4G signal--which is what I have repeating out at the barn. My Ipad is the only device that doesn't prefer the 2.4G signal, even the laptops with external AC-capable wi-fi adapters. Maybe 5G is ahead of its time.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Worthless junk
What's not so great: Config website does not exist
To configure, you have to go to www.asusrouter.com, but this site does not exist--when you try to browse there, you get redirected to the main Asus corporate site. So you can't configure it, which makes it useless junk. Had to take it back.

comparison

What are the product differences between the RT-AC87R and the RT-AC87U?

Also, I would like to know the differences between the RT-AC87U and the RT-AC3200

Thanks you,
Paul B
They are identical. The "R" is sold through Best Buy, the "U" is sold through other channels. I had to check this out myself, to make sure that the great PC Mag reviews of the "U" were describing Best Buy's "R." They definitely R.

Will It Work?

Will the ranger extender work with Verizon Fios Actiontec MI424WR router?
NO--configuration website not accessible. This item doesn't work at all because it cannot be configured.
