Yes, you have to pay TiVo for the service. There are several pricing options, including a life time fee. We took that. The good news is that the life time is tied to the set, and there is a secondary market for working sets if you later decide to drop TiVo. The downside is what we found. The TiVo Mini failed in six months and the TiVo Romeo failed in two years. It cost $150.00 to get a replacement unit. We dropped TiVo and wrote off the lifetime investment rather than pay several hundred dollars every few years because the quality of the hardware is so poor.
