I bought a Romeo and a mini at Best Buy. The Mini malfunctioned in less than six months and had to be replaced. At two years the Romeo began playing back shows in jitters (stop and go in playback). Two weeks later it would not play live TV, or enable access to TiVo settings. After 4-8 hours on help line, their technicians concluded the hard drive was gone. A replacement costs $150.00. I switched to Verizon. They don't charge for broken machines.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Cable cards

I know it requires two CableCARDs to record 4 shows, but it will still work with only 1, right?
The Romeo uses different cards from TiVo's earlier DVRs. The number of shows is unrelated to the number of cards. Romeo needs only one, and it is different from the two in the earlier TiVo DVR.

Subscription required?

Yes, you have to pay TiVo for the service. There are several pricing options, including a life time fee. We took that. The good news is that the life time is tied to the set, and there is a secondary market for working sets if you later decide to drop TiVo. The downside is what we found. The TiVo Mini failed in six months and the TiVo Romeo failed in two years. It cost $150.00 to get a replacement unit. We dropped TiVo and wrote off the lifetime investment rather than pay several hundred dollars every few years because the quality of the hardware is so poor.

How well does this work with FIOS? Can I eliminate my FIOS DVR?

You can eliminate the FIOS DVR, but you have to insert a verizon card into the Romeo. Verizon will bill you monthly for the card, as they do now for the FIOS DVR. The amount is a few dollars less. FIOS will work with the Romeo, but you may encounter problems in the linkage that will require some time on the phone with TiVo support.
