What's great about it: Portable, Easy setup, does what you need and nothing more

What's not so great: Offline slight hassle, Small local storage, keys on display

Those who spend 98% of their computer time online will love this computer. It works exactly as it should under the chrome browser and I have yet to find a webpage that it doesn't like. That is not to say it has it's drawbacks however.

First the good. Facebook, Twitter, Google Docs, these all work perfectly. The Samsung Chromebook sets up very easily, especially if you have a Google account anyway. I was setup and online in less than 5 minutes of pulling the computer out of the box. I set it up for offline as soon as I got online however. (VERY IMPORTANT!!) If you don't set it up for offline usage while online the computer has some issues. You'll need to log back in while online roughly every 24 hours but it wasn't something I really found annoying. It's easy and simple. The size is perfect for any type of travel. I had no issues with TSA and have found myself stuffing it in my bag rather than taking my iPad. The battery life is wonderful at over 8 hours and the battery charges in only 2 hours. Personal usage will vary.

The Bad. However you look at it the Samsung Chromebook will never be a fully equipped laptop. It wasn't designed to. So those thousands of movie files you have probably won't work on here. Your large library of music just won't work here either. I have noticed that the keys leave disgusting marks on the screen and haven't found a way to get rid of them. The sound quality leaves something to be desired but can be mitigated with headphones. Don't think about playing games or downloading new software because you'll not be able to run it. Finally the SD reader is...troublesome.

Overall the Samsung Chromebook stands up as a shining example of great experience of the Chrome browser. Low price, Fast connections, Does everything it says it should. It's a great browser. Just don't expect it to play Minecraft or connect a lot of peripherals to it. It's more happy as a laptop internet browser than a desktop replacement.

What wireless portable internet connnecter should I get to work with this?

Any wireless router should work with this. Essentially what you're doing is taking your hard line and turning it into a wireless signal with the router. It looks like this.

Internet Signal --> Modem at home --> Wireless Router ::: Samsung Chromebook

The lines are hardlines (ie cables) and the colon (:) is the wireless signal. You will have to do a setup on your router but it isn't very difficult.

Can I transfer photos from my SD cards to an external hard drive?

I would like to know if I can use this devise to transfer photos from my 32 GB SD card to my 1 TB external hard drive?

You should be able to. The Chromebook isn't designed for high performance transfers so it will take quite a while but it should work.

Is this unit compatible with Java and flash player

The Samsung Chromebook is compatible with Flash but not Java as of this posting.

The Samsung Chromebook has 2GB of Ram installed on the system. There currently isn't a way for you to upgrade this. If you're looking to upgrade a system, the Samsung Chromebook is not what you should be looking at. You should be looking at a traditional laptop.

Does Ethernet Adapter Need a Modem?

I've been researching ethernet adapters for Chrome. I don't quite understand how they work. I know you plug it in to a USB port. But the port on the other end ; is that where you insert the ethernet cable from your DSL modem? If so, when you take to, say a cafe where they have an internet connection, how does that work? I'm missing something.

Best Answer

An Ethernet Adapter is only needed if you do not have a wireless connection available. It plugs into the USB port on your Chromebook and the other end of the dongle has the ethernet cord plugged into it. I have never done this as I always have a wireless connection but it theoretically should work.

Any cafe should have a wireless connection and you don't need to use a dongle there.

Yes there is. It's called Google Docs. They have spreadsheets and powerpoint presentations available for you to make. It is only online however.

I really like the Samsung Chromebook but I find the 11 inch too small. Do they make a 13 inch?

Kind of. The only displays for Chromebooks that are larger than 11in. is the Google Pixel at 12.85in. and the HP Pavilion Chromebook at 14in.. Samsung does not make a 13in. at this time.

Can this download/run C & R program?

I don't believe so. Basically what you can do in the Chrome web browser on your computer is what it can do. There is little functionality beyond that.
