Internet Service Providers generally supply a device called a DSL modem or cable modem as part of their service. There is a jack on this device that supplies standard Ethernet (although the speeds may vary greatly). You could plug your computer directly into this box and have wired internet connectivity.
What the router does is to allow you to share your internet connection among multiple wired and wireless devices. Virtually every router in the consumer marketplace is designed to work with standard Ethernet. So, in answer to your question, there should be no compatibility issues between any router and any Internet Service Provider.
