What's great about it: plug n play
I needed a flash drive or external hdd that would work with my tv. i have a 32gb 3.0 usb jump drive that worked but with 3d movies the space wasn't enough. the externally powered external hard drives that i have (my books) wouldn't work. the main reasons i purchased this was because of price $60 - space 500gb - speed 3.0 - and mostly because it was port powered (which is what i expected was going to be the difference). loaded it up 3.0 in a no time with 3d movies from my pc and BAM. worked perfectly, recognized by television first plug in. GREAT BUY.
i did register it right away at WD's website. I have had LOTS of problems with the 1tb,2tb and 3tb my book hard drives crashing over time, so i recommend UNPLUGGING any external hard drive that is not in use. whether it be in a tv or computer. hope this helps!

This product has... Included software is not useful, Fast, Large capacity/good size
About me... Budget Conscious, Work with large multimedia files, Need a simple backup solution
I would recommend this to a friend!

Format to XFAT so a MAC can save to this EXHD?
How Can this model be re-formatted to XFAT to enable it to save files from multiple MAC laptops?

try ACRONIS its a free software download available thru WD's website as well as other free formatting software that they have. i have 3 different progs that they let out for free.

Can I connect this via the USB port to my router.
Yes, if yur router supports network storage and its not service port for the router. you may have to reformat it and clean it and possibly change to fat32 format if necessary.

how do i get it to connect with my HP desktop? will not connect to my HP desktop
this is plug n play, should be recognized under my computer. if its not, i suspect u have a bad drive. 2 obvious choices, plug into someone else computer and verify or return. very rare, but i have seen a bad cable before. you could try plugging it in and rebooting and see if it gets detected under startup.
fyi, 3.0 is backwards compatible in most cp's. will read 2.0 unless its a 3.0 port - the speeds are DRASTICALLY different. 3.0 ports are typically blue.

Can you backup OS files and two computers with different Windows OS.
I have a desktop running Windows 8.1 and a laptop running Windows 7. Will this drive backup the system files as well as my personal data on both computers and how does it differentiate between the two computers? Can I use this drive to transfer files between the two computers?
if you setup the drive as different partitions and of course rename them differently each partition will be recognized separately and be seen in both os, but just choose the os with the intended partition. because many of the source and structure files will be the same

is compatible with ps3 ?
is compatible with the Playstation 3, to store data, movies, images. With this hard drive I can see the data on the playstation 3?
will have to format to fat32 for it to be recognized
