PROS
========
Excellent user interface. Tons of software options out of the box. GUI is light years ahead of Netgear routers. Good range on 2G.

CONS
========
DO NOT BUY. Highly unstable. Just like every other person has stated, this router can't maintain a 5G connection to save it's life. I was standing no more than 20 feet away and both our xbox one and my cell phone kept losing their connections. The 5G light kept blinking on and off slowly. Poor range on 5G, but that is to be expected.

OTHER THOUGHTS
========
I am going to clue everyone in to the countless hours I poured into researching this router and other options. I ended up returning mine.
1) If you are going to get this router, or any other ASUS router, don't use the stock firmware. Go and get the ASUSWRT Merlin firmware. Google it.
2) This router is capable of using DD-WRT, however from what I have read you will lose the broadcom hardware acceleration capability. With ASUS Merlin you'll retain that. Which means better performance.
3) Irregardless of the firmware, I think the hardware is questionable. So in the end it really doesn't matter what firmware you put on this router.
4) I looked at alternatives. Mainly these 3: Netgear Nighthawk R7000, ASUS RT-N66R, ASUS RT-AC68U. All of these can run DD-WRT and/or ASUS Merlin. What I was looking for first and foremost was stability and range. Firmware features are secondary. But I also wanted a router that could run DD-WRT firmware, basically as a way out if I needed it.
I settled on the Netgear R7000 with the STOCK firmware, and here is why. According to smallnetbuilder and all of their tests, the R7000 is the superior router in terms of hardware performance vs. the ASUS RT-AC68U. Look it up for yourself.

I also found that the signal range was a little better on the Nighthawk.
Also, according to the DD-WRT site you do NOT want to run DD-WRT on the Nighthawk router unless you have an internet connection of 100MB-300MB. Anything below a 50MB connection will be poor. Again you lose the propriety Broadcom hardware acceleration. http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/DD-WRT_on_R7000
So far the Nighthawk has been rock solid. I absolutely HATE the Netgear user interface and the lack of options, but no one is complaining about wi-fi connectivity which at the end of the day for me is what matters most.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

comparison

What are the product differences between the RT-AC87R and the RT-AC87U?

Also, I would like to know the differences between the RT-AC87U and the RT-AC3200

Thanks you,
Paul B
AC86R and AC87U are the same product. "R" are found in brick and mortar retail stores. "U" you will find online. No difference in actual product.

The 87U is an AC2400, which is the combined speed of the bands, 600MB and 1800MB. Unless you have crazy fast internet speeds, this router is overkill for a home network, so would a AC3200.

Also, I purchased this router and returned it due to stability issues. I would not recommend it.
