Microsoft - Wireless Adapter
Microsoft - Wireless Adapter
This Microsoft Q6W-00001 wireless adapter attaches to a port on your Surface Touch or Type Cover (not included) and uses Bluetooth technology, enabling you to connect your Cover to a Surface, Surface Pro, Surface 2 or Surface Pro 2 tablet (not included).

A very useful (but slightly expensive) accessory

What's great about it: Instantaneous power-on, connection to computer. Turns Type/Touch cover into a bluetooth keyboard/mouse for any device
What's not so great: Doesn't support gestures (but an update is coming)
The accessory was purchased with a surface pro 2. It has been tested with both a first and second generation type cover and works very well. It powers the backlight on the second generation just as if were directly attached to the computer.
The connection is instantaneous after it has been paired to the computer. The magnet is strong and easy to connect to the cover. I find it very nice because I always used to carry a second wireless keyboard for my slate computer (Asus Eee Slate, Samsung 700T, Surface Pro 2). I like them because I can rearrange my workspace. Now I just need to carry a single, compact, lightweight adapter.
I've also been in communication with Microsoft about the gesture support. Bluetooth does not understand the gestures the cover sends wirelessly, and an update to the drivers is coming (-1/2 star#. Also the charging takes a while ( -1/4 star # . And it is a little pricey, but I bought # -1/4 star # . So in the end 4 stars.
Once the Bluetooth drivers are updated it should be a 5 star accessory # with some rounding ) .
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Backlight, full set of trackpad gestures
What's not so great: Nothing
I had used the 1st Gen type cover for a few weeks before upgrading to my Surface Pro 2 and new 2nd Gen type cover.
I really like the improved track pad. The sensitivity is greatly improved. Multi-touch gestures work much better. Two finger swipes for example mimic what your finger does and are context sensitive. On the start screen a side guesture pans around your tiles. An up and down swipe switch between your default start screen and the all apps menu. In IE the side swipes function as forward and backward while up/down scrolls.
Swipe from left/right also moves the mouse for you. So you can select your previous app with only a swipe from the left followed by a tap. No need to move the cursor manually to the charms.
Back light is great! What more is there to say.
And the feel of the fabric is a change I like very much over the first generation.

What's great about it: Battery life, full keyboard, Wacom Stylus, 1080p, <2lbs for tablet, WiDi, microSD, 3USB ports (1xUSB3; 2xUSB2 on dock)
What's not so great: Limited tilt angle in dock. Solved with Microsoft wedge keyboard
Great computer. The battery life is fantastic when you use the built in Samsung settings tool. Tell it to turn the fan to silent, then it keeps the CPU from generating heat or using a lot of power. I never noticed any lag when using it but a full 100% battery lasts longer than 6.5 hr. Up to 8 depending on use.
Speaking of battery, there is a battery saver setting. It limits the charge to 80% but allows you to recharge the battery 1000 times instead of 300. It should help the computer last for years. At 80% I get an easy 5hrs of battery.
The screen is great, very high resolution and easy to read. It is nice to use it with OneNote. I print PDFs to OneNote and on lower resolution screens I had trouble reading my papers. Now even super script and sub script are clear, if small. Speaking of OneNote...
The S-Pen stylus, also a Walcom, is fantastic. Accurate, fluid, and very pressure sensitive. The pen has a rubber tip which gives it great friction. If you love digital inking you will love this computer. Normal Wacom pens with erasers work out of the box.
The docks is really great. It serves to protect the computer, adds USB ports and provides a full size keyboard and track pad. My only grip is small, I would like it to tip back farther. That said I really like it.
The computer has plenty of ports and connectivity options: USB3, USB2, microSD, micro-HDMI, wireless display with WiDi.
Over all the computer is fast, I use it for code development, reading, everything. I am very, very happy with the machine for work and at home. It stays very cool with the Samsung Power management options. TRY THEM!
This product is... A touch pad that works great, Perfect for Business, A nice compact size, easy to set up, lightning fast, digital ink
About me... Basic web surfing & emails, Parent with kids, Technology guru, Comfortable with technology, astrophysisist

Microsoft - Surface 2 - 10.6" - 64GB
Microsoft - Surface 2 - 10.6" - 64GB
Microsoft Surface 2 Tablet: Mix work and play with a tablet that juggles business or homework just as easily as it keeps pace with your gaming and Skype chats. The touch-optimized version of Microsoft Office RT keeps you productive on the go, and the built-in kickstand features just the right angle for viewing, whether on a table or your lap.

Low Vision

I use my 22" monitor at 1366 x 768 resolution and it's fairly visible. How low can I set the resolution on the Surface 2? Is there a comparable setting?
Don't change the resolution if you want things to look bigger, you will get blurry text and images. Instead change the dpi scaling. Right click on the desktop -> Screen Resolution -> Make text and other items larger or smaller -> use the slide.

Wireless Display

Can I use a widi with the Microsoft surface 2 or do I need the pro
Surface 2 supports Miracast for wireless display just like the Pro and Pro 2. It is a different standard than WiDi. The Pro actually does not support WiDi either because it does not use an Intel wireless card.

can you connect surface to i phone verizon wireless plan

I regularly tether my phone on AT&T. There is no technical reason you can not use your phone to create a hotspot and do the same on Verizon.

Gift needed for husband. What product would be best for reading books but also playing games and surfing the internet?

It might depend on the types of games. If he likes tablet games, but also X-box or traditional computer games, the surface pro 2 is a one stop everything device. The screen is also exceptionally clear and very non-reflective. In fact it set a record for the least reflective tablet screen available.

If you want something just for easy gaming, reading and tablet use that is smaller (8 inches) try the Dell venue 8 Pro. For $299 dollars you get a fantasic PC in the shape of an 8 inch tablet. It weighs less than 1lb, has about 10hour battery and in a pinch can serve as a fully functioning PC.

Can I download text books and how much memory will I need?

I am looking for a tablet to take to class, take notes and have my text books with me with out breaking my back. Can I download text books and if so will the 32 or 64 GB memory be enough for them.
You can download text books, or any files to the computer. If the text books are PDF files, the included MS Reader app with work very well with them. If the textbook is available on Kindle or Nook you can use the free apps. The size shouldn't be a factor with either 32 or 64GB, but if you find yourself needing space you can add a micro-SD card under the kickstand for up to 64GB of additional space.
