What's great about it: Easy to set-up, Does turn on and off on demand with a smart phone from any location.
What's not so great: Horrible App performance - freezes, or hangs up on simple commands. Buttons occasionally do not work. Very costly
Out of the box the instructions are simple and with one minor hiccup I was able to connect the wemo to my network and access it from my Motorola MotoX (running KitKat Android OS).
The bad. The App is buggy at the very least. Occasionally opening the app my wemo device is not listed. Their is a refresh button which is sometimes responsive and sometimes not. When the refresh is responsive, occasionally the wemo device shows up, while other times it is stuck "thinking" and will continue indefinitely (I have gone to bed and woke up and it was still attempting to refresh). In the app when it is stuck on a command such as refresh, the only way to interrupt it is to kill the app and restart. I have never been able to schedule "rules" (e.g. on at sunset/off at sunrise). It locks up most times and if it does not, then the save button is unresponsive sending the app into the death spiral requiring the app to be killed and then re-started. I have tried installing on our Ipad and ran into the same 'bugginess', so I do not think it is an OS issue. I went to the Help page and some of the help FAQ's have no answer. It seems as if the easiest part of the product was an afterthought... as the plug by itself performs well.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What's great about it: Very clean interface, very intuitive
What's not so great: Needs some minor personalization out of the box
I purchased this phone after learning it was being manufactured here in the U.S. (about three miles from my home) and after owning Samsung Galaxy S, Iphone 4, and an older Motorolla Droid (In our family). The old Droid was relatively indestructible and aged well.
The performance of the phone is so far instantaneous. Figuring out how to connect Bluetooth, connect wifi, downloading aps, etc. required very little navigating, or intense password memory skills (cough couch...iPhone cough). I am very happy with battery life compared to the Samsung Galaxy S, but to be fair the Samsung and battery were close to three years old.
The phone feels good in the hand, although a plastic, it feels like it is metal, but has a rubberized back plate so that it does not slide easily in a car, or out of your hand, etc.
The interface seems clean, meaning that the screens do not contain too many apps or featured I do not want. The integration with Gmail, contacts and calendar again were seamless. At any time you can slide the top of the screen down to access all communications and notifications at a moments notice. Also from that simple swipe you can access the entire settings menu. GPS functionality for running apps, etc is very quick and even works indoors (within reason... a window fairly close by, etc.) The camera takes good pictures, and judging by my self portrait, shows more detail than I really need or want!
The speaker for music is surprisingly loud, with decent quality. A nice feature is that you can see new texts, email, notifications, etc without unlocking your phone. What is great is that if you are playing Pandora, etc while running, you can skip songs without unlocking the phone..... very nice when running/exercising, etc...
The only negatives so far (although very easy to correct):
When I first got the phone, I did have to increase the brightness for my taste, also I reduced the tactile feedback (I thought that when you pressed a key on the keyboard, the phone vibrated a little too hard).
This product is... Tough/durable
About me... Heavy apps user, Business Professional, Need phone to keep me organized, more impressed with functionality than features
I would recommend this to a friend!

What is the max load it will handle? Can it control a window air conditioner (120 V, 12 Amps)

In short yes. The Wemo is designed to handle a load that a normal circuit can handle. Most circuits are 15 to 20 amp circuits so this was designed to handle that. This is effectively just an on/off switch.
