What's great about it: Easy to use, instant on. Reasonable price.
What's not so great: 8 gb is too small, most apps do not use sd card.
I have an iPhone. I bought this tablet because I thought it is a good starter tablet. 8 gb memory is too small but I could use the external SD card. I found out that most apps do not use or allow to use the external SD card. The card is good for pictures files, songs, etc. Most general use apps are quite good. However, some apps such as GPS most of the time fail when out of wifi range. Or else, it need a large memory space that 8 gb cannot hold. Moreover, the GPS apps lack completeness and not working properly.
This product is... responsive touch screen, easy to set up, A nice compact size, Sharp graphics, Easy to navigate, Comfortable to hold

can i play movies and music from my iTunes account on this?

I did not tried playing movies yet. I did play iTune songs on the external SD card. What I did was plugged my tablet to my PC and copied iTune songs to the sd card. It automatically converts the files to playable format on the Tab 3.

What types of sd cards are supported on the tab 3 ?

Micro-SD. I bought a class 10 32gb micro-SD. I think a lower class should work but the price was not much different from class 10 so I bought one class 10 and use it.

My tablet wouldn't turn on when I first took it out of the box. Does this mean the product is defective, or is there something I can do?

I tried to charge it for a hour, and that did not work.
I have no problem charging. I do think micro-USB port is fragile and also need a proper insertion. You might have not plug it in properly.
