This is my third tablet... and I am quite impressed with pretty much everything... especially the size (8.4" is right in between today's big and little tablets); the resolution is awesome and it enables having more than one app on the screen at a time. I had done my research when Best Buy put these critters on sale... a high-resolution powerhouse at great price! I did have a small issue with getting my home WiFi to actually send/receive (WiFi was 'connected' but gave an proxy error and was not able to transfer data). I had to "forget" the connection and rescan and reconnect... that was the only glitch soooo far (<1 week of heavy use).
I would recommend this to a friend!

can a credit card reader be used with this

It should. Square states Android 4.0+... but I have no personal experience with the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4...
