SLRs are reasonably sturdy but dropping it on a hard surface will likely cause damage that needs a repair. More expensive cameras are built stronger (since pros tend to be rougher), but the lens is still glass and fragile. Be gentle with it, and consider a Geek Squad protection plan if you're nervous about it. I also recommend getting a UV or polarizing filter to put on the lens, partly to improve contrast but also to act as a protector.
