What's great about it: Sound quality and battery life
I did lots of research looking for a bluetooth speaker that would meet my specifications. I wanted good range, long battery life, easy use, and of course great sound quality.
The Bose Soundlink Mini doesn't disappoint on any of these points. We had guests over the other day and they were astounded that the quality sound they were hearing was coming from this tiny speaker. We also used it for over 7 hours and its battery never gave out.
Yes it is expensive and having a protective cover as an additional purchase seems a bit chincy, but the sound quality is awesome.

Only important note is that the speaker doesn't deliver big volume. I suspect that Bose engineers focused on sound quality at a respectable volume instead of distoration at big volume. So, if you want to really crank it opt for the Bose Soundlink and don't go mini.

Is there a way to power this with AC to avoid using the Li-ion battery?
I like the portability of this device, but would also like to use it as a stationary computer speaker which would mean I'd have it powered on most hours of the day. To avoid straining the battery, is there an option to plug it in directly to an outlet? If turned on while sitting on the dock, does it use the battery or the incoming current from the AC?
You can use the device as both a computer speaker and a bluetooth speaker. That's what I do. I have the speaker on the desk for use with the computer when I am at the computer and then take it off the base for use in other locations. You can use it in either Bluetooth or Aux mode. In Aux mode you just use a speaker wire and plug it into the computer directly. (Wire not included). Then you can move it and use it in bluetooth mode.
In fact I have the speaker synched to my iPad for bluetooth use and directly connected to my Mac for desk use. When setting on the base the speaker will initially draw from the battery, but then start drawing directly from power base and lasts all day that way.
Battery is extremely long lived though. I have used mine for over 7 hours without it being exhausted.

Can it be used with an iPad?
Sure, the speaker works with any device that can create a bluetooth signal. Note that you can only have one bluetooth enabled device synched to the device at a time. That doesn't mean you can't use it with multiple bluetooth enabled devices just that you will have to adjust the speaker and resynch each time you want to change sources. That's a two or three minute process, mainly waiting for the speaker to identify the device.

Can we just listen to music downloaded on phone or does bluetooth have to be enabled?
You have to have a bluetooth connection between any device and the speaker. It has to get a signal somehow.

After using the speaker for around 30 mins while connected to AC power, the power indicator changes from solid green to blinking amber.
After a while the indicator changes back to green. Seems that the speaker is using battery despite being connected to AC power and starting to charge after 30 mins. Is this by design or is my unit defective?
Mine does the same thing. My guess is that initially the speaker works from the battery then when the battery needs to be charged it checks to see if there is power and then provides the charge.
Note, if you keep listening for long periods of time the charge indicator will stay green when connected to the base after that initial switch to amber for a while.

How far can I keep the iPad and speaker for best quality?
It all depends on what type of interference you have between the source of your bluetooth signal and the speaker. I use mine consistently with the iPad 40 feet away in another room of the house and get great quality. Only limitation I have found is trying to take the speaker outside and keep the iPad inside then you get some minor skips in signal.
