What's great about it: screen, os, quality
What's not so great: need more accessories
Got the S4 Active and instantly fell in love. The phone is heavier than the S4 but I think it feels better, sturdier. It has an 8mp camera witch is lower than the S4, but unless you are using the phone to make huge portraits, it won't matter. The phone is fast and very responsive. The added bonus is the ability to resist water. I go through phones and get bored with them quickly. The Active is equal with the S4 with the peace of mind knowing that if you get shoved in a pool or stuck in the rain, your phone will still work. My old iPhone 4S would last a day and need to be recharged. I have used the Active nearly constantly since I got it and it whats lasted for nearly two days.
I work in the gaming industry and I'm a heavy user of the phone. After 16 straight hours it still had plenty battery left.
Normal S4 cases will not fit this phone. Needs options for cases.

what are the major differences btwn the iphone 5 and the galaxy 4s active?

The S4 active has a larger screen and has the added benefit of water resistance and a huge selection of extra technology that far exceeds the iPhone 5. The iPhone is simple and easy to use, it also limits what you can do by having no flash player and also everything you do or want to download has to go through iTunes, witch can get expensive.
