Does this phone automatically switch to a wi-fi connections when one is available?

Yes, this is available in settings under connections, tap on the word wifi and you'll be presented with all the options for your wifi you can set it to connect to known networks, and even to tell you when available networks are around or you can just turn it off. Hope this helps:)

Can you read the screen in bright sun?

I use my phone on a boat while wearing Polaroid sunglasses. The Casio I have now is impossible to read. Will a Samsung 4 be better?
I take it your glasses are polarized right, this phone is easier to see with polarized glasses I have some my self and find that a lot of the phone screens you cannot see well with these on and that's cause the screens try to be anti glare so it counteracts the glasses lenses although the colors look weird at times depending on the angle I find this phone and the htc 8x windows phone the easiest ones to see even when wearing these glasses, what I do at times is bring my glasses with me and look at the live units with and with out them. If there something on the screen without and then with it magically disappears than its no good to us. Hope this helps:)

what's the advantage of getting phones at bestbuys?

Best buy is a one stop shop. Get a phone, get it activated, learn a little about it, get your accessories for your investment, cause lets be serious a smart phone is an investment:) and if your a guys this store is like a candy store to us, and if your a lady than you have an entire store to entertain your man while you get the phone and accessories you want with out us bugging you. Lol I joke but in all seriousness one stop shop no matter the carrier.

Can this phone work in other carriers like AT&T or even abroad?

I'm currently using Verizon phones but I may start to use AT&T next year. Will this phone work there as well?
And I'm also planning to go abroad so I'm wondering whether this phone could work on the local carriers there.
These phone don't normally come unlocked for carriers which is what would allow you to bring from carrier to carrier, that being said their is a possibility you can have it unlocked for global purposes, I would call Vzw global department you can have a customer service rep transfer you, if there is a way to do it these guys will find a way. What I find with unlocking a carrier specific phone is that all of the phones technology's don't work cause of the dif frequencies like data will work but voice and text won't or the opposite. Unlocked phone will have the ability to use all frequencies and be able to be carried carrier to carrier. Hopes this helps and have a safe trip if you have not left yet:)
