What's great about it: sound
What's not so great: doesn't work with programmable universal remote
We own a TIVO premier. We could not control the Samsung soundbar volume, mute and input through the TIVO remote control. We wanted to control all aspects of our TV viewing with one remote control.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Do I need a receiver for this?

No. Sound comes through soundbar and wireless woofer. No receiver of TV speakers needed.
