Have had the device a week. I read all the reviews before purchasing and a few were bad, which does happen.
Bought it and hooked it all up and had it running in about an hour after connecting all my devices. Between iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, two iMacs, Mac Air laptop, and several wifi enabled cameras I have about 25 devices.
The first few days the thing was a beast and handled all the traffic. Granted not all the devices are not on and used at the same time. But it worked great and we even streamed 3 movies from the iMac to the apple tvs while surfing the internet. about 3 days in devices wouldn't connect anymore and would start to prompt me for the password. They would even try to connect to my neighbors house.
I reset the router and started over, worked again for a day or so and then all the devices once again started to disconnect.

very very disappointing. right now I'm on day seven and I think its time to pack it up and bring it back as it has been two resets and it keeps reverting to dropping my devices and then not letting them reconnect.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What's great about it: Quick phone calls
What's not so great: The price
As the commercial shows it's really cool.
I mean you can text with it and make phone calls and all the other interesting stuff.

And the cons.
Well when trying to send text messages it constantly says no connectivity check connectivity. Constantly askes who you want to send it to after you have already said who you wanted. Constantly chooses the wrong word when speaking to it and even when talking slow.
People on the other end of the phone call say it has a lot of echo. And on your end it is very hard to hear them.

If you try the stepping app for it it counts hand movements as a step. So no where near accurate.
Battery life is pretty good
Radio stations app is horrible. Along with basically all the others.
Camera is nifty but hard to take photos at such an odd angle.
But it's still a cool concept
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Will the current Samsung Gear be compatible with S4?
The Samsung Gear know clearly says for Note 3. I was going to go ahead an order this one, but scared that it would be another model that comes out for the S4. Will it be safe for me to go ahead an order this model for my S4?

Can the watch be purchased separately and paired with the note 3 by owner?
Yes it can as my wife and I bought ours after we already had the S4 and the note 3. It's very easy

what is the maxium distance the watch can be from the galaxy note ,and still recieve calls and texts
i am a UPS driver i cant keep my phine attached to me ,however i can keep the watch on. i am sometimes up to 200 feet away from my truck where the galaxy note would be .would still like the watch to receive calls and texts
It works off blue tooth so only about 6-8 feet. Maybe ten if clear line of sight but other than that. Nothing more.

No it can't be used without a phone. It has to be paired with a device.
