What's great about it: compact, fun, and productive on the road
What's not so great: exchange account a little combersome to set up
This is the first tablet that I wanted to buy for personal use, and so far it does not disappoint. My son has a kindle fire HD, the only thing that is better on the kindle are the speakers, the Surface2 speakers are a little weak. Other than that this tablet gets high marks from me so far.
I am traveling on business this week and have been able to eliminate a heavy laptop and a couple of heavy binders. I scanned all my documents into the tablet and with Microsoft office I can be productive in excel while on the road. Excel on the tablet works exactly the same as my desktop, validation rules, vlookup, and saving a file to PDF format all work perfectly. The only thing is I was not able to configure Outlook to work, but as an alternative the mail, people, and calendar apps are all synced to my exchange account.
I transferred all my pictures and videos from my cell phone to the tablet and am actually viewing videos that I took several years ago on my cell phone for the first time. My PC at home is old and slow and wouldn't view video files smoothly, much less let me edit them. I pulled up a soccer game on espn3.com and watched it with my son and daughter. Having a USB slot allows for fast and easy file transfer between my flash drive and my cell phone. For only $450, this is a powerful device.
I purchased a Samsung Bluetooth mouse, Logitech Bluetooth keyboard (which was $50 compared to $80 for the soft touch and $130 for the hard touch keyboards from Microsoft) and also paired a small Bluetooth speaker to the surface2.
The app store does seem limited, but some of my favorites are there like Hulu ,Netflix, and Facebook. Netflix and Hulu both work just like on my Roku. Eventually I could imagine taking some of my movies and downloading them to the hard drive or a flash drive and take those with me on trips.
Overall a great product, exactly what I want in a tablet for fun and business travel. I'm glad the RT platform was available as I wouldn't want to spend $800 on this device just to get the full version of windows 8. Besides, the RT runs on an ARM processor which should give the battery a longer duration between charges.

when do you guys have surface 2 available at stores?

Can it be used with a 3g or 4g service?
I created a mobile 4g lte hotspot with my Samsung galaxy 4s and connected the surface 2 via WiFi to get internet. Otherwise I'm not familiar with connecting this device directly to a wireless network.

Compatibility, what comes in the box when purchased?
Do either the surface 2 or surface 2 pro accept documents transferred from a windows 7 computer, or pictures from windows 7. I want t0 make sure when I purchase one I get the right one. wgich is more compatible, RT, or windows 8
I have the surface 2 with RT. You can transfer files to the surface with a USB flash drive or even from a cell phone with a USB cable.

Why would I buy a Surface 2 over an IPad?
With only $50 difference why would I buy a Surface 2 over an iPad?
Two words, Microsoft office. Are you a business user? The iPad, to me, for business use is useless. Having office loaded on the surface eliminates the need for me to pack a laptop on trips. Hands down a winner in my book because office is vital to my day to day business productivity.

What is the difference between Surface and Surface 2?
There's about a $100 difference between Surface and Surface 2. Why would I buy a Surface.
Surface 2 comes with a faster processor, has a two stage kick stand, and other upgrades like a full version of outlook (which I've yet been able to sync with exchange). For me, the faster processor was important because I tested excel on the surface and it took a long time to load my 5 Mb file in excel on the surface and on the surface 2 it loads lightning fast. There are probably other differences, but those are the main ones that sold me on the surface 2.

Can I download itunes onto an external hard drive and run it on the Surface?
I was looking to purchase a new laptop immediately and an ipad mini or air when the new ones are released, but came across this and just might do this as an all in one, IF it is possbile to access my itunes by adding an external drive, since I still need that application for my phone and ipods I already own.
Does anyone know if this is possible and how difficult it would be? Thanks!

Take a look at the surface 2 pro. Pro 2 is supposed to be the same OS as the desktop version, Windows 8, which will support iTunes. The surface 2 rt only allows you to download from the app store, which is limited. If you were considering purchasing two devices anyways, maybe the higher price tag is worth it to you. The other alternative is to consider using Microsoft windows media player to sync you song files. I recently switched from an iPhone to an android device and the WMP syncs my music files perfectly. I have mostly music ripped from my cd collection, with just a few songs downloaded from iTunes and also amazon. WMP was able to find all of my music library (including my iTunes and amazon music) and sync all my favorite music. Good luck!
