What's great about it: A great extension of my phone.
What's not so great: A bit bulky.
I love knowing who is calling without taking my phone out of my pocket. I often miss calls on vibrate when my phone is in my pocket, but with the Galaxy Gear Smartwatch I don't miss calls anymore. I can send a quick text using S Voice. The only slight issue is compatability. I have the Galaxy Mega and it has not upgraded the OS yet so I don't get text messages on my gear. The update for my phone is expected in January and once that happens, It will be perfect!!
I would recommend this to a friend!

what does only capatable with galaxy note 3 mean

It is compatible with all the notes, the S3 and 4 as well as the mega.

can you use this watch without a phone?

No. Without a phone it is just an expensive watch.
