What's great about it: Good price, quiet operation, quality product
What's not so great: Manual defrost
This freezer was purchased to add additional storage to the freezer in our 17 cu.ft. refrigerator. Due to space restrictions, only a chest freezer could be considered, and the size was limited. This freezer exactly fit the maximum size we could purchase, and I was pleased that it was a GE, since I think they currently build some of the best appliances available. There aren't many frills, which I didn't want anyway, but there are two baskets instead of the usual one. The temperature dial is easily accessible in the front, and there is a light so you know it's running, which is a good thing, because it's so quiet you can't tell it's on unless you put your ear up to it. It down to temperature quickly and holds its' temperature precisely. It doesn't run very often, which is typical for a chest freezer, so I expect about $3 a month in electricity to keep it running. The warranty covers everything for at least a year, and if it works that long it'll probably last for 20+ years. There's a decent written manual with the freezer, and they even include a little plastic ice scraper in case you get some buildup around the gasket, which is normal with a chest-type freezer. From past experience with chest freezers I don't expect to defrost it more than once a year, which is pretty simple thanks to a drain connection on the front. My delivery experience was about as good as it gets; the delivery men set everything up and made sure it was working before they left, taking all the packing material away with them. They were prompt and courteous and very personable. This was a totally painless purchase, and I'd certainly recommend this product and Best Buy to anyone.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Are there any freezers that will not shut off during winter when I put them in the Garage and the temperature drops below 55 degrees?

I had a freezer just like this one, also a GE, and it spent its' life on my back porch. In the winter there were times when the temperature got below freezing out there. I don't know how often it ran in those cold temperatures, but it never stopped working and the food stayed rock hard. Keep it out of the sun and on a wooden platform that allows some air to circulate and it should work OK.

Outdoor use?

Wondering if this freezer is appropriate for use in a garage. We have a refrigerator out there already...the freezer conked out and were told it was because it was outside.
There are commercial duty freezers and refrigerators that are made to operate in extreme conditions; extremely hot or cold, that is. A normal household freezer like this will work fine between about 20 degrees F. and 120 degrees F. for short periods of time. If you keep this freezer outside in sub-zero temperatures for a long period you'll probably shorten it's useful life because you're putting a lot of stress on the compressor. But if it's just temperature dropping at night with warm up above freezing during the day, it should work OK as long as you keep it dry, especially underneath.

will this freezer operate in a Texas garage. Got reply the first time and found NO ANSWER when I clicked to "see answer"?????

received reply 1st time I asked question, but NO ANSWER when I clicked on "SEE ANSWER"????? No instructions, either!
I don't see why it wouldn't, as long as you have a 110 volt 16 amp circuit (typical house receptacle). If you shut the power off at night and that circuit isn't powered, the freezer won't run until you power up again the next day. Fridges and freezers run best in cool temperatures, but anything under 120 degrees or so will let them operate OK. None of them are really designed to be kept outdoors in freezing temperatures, but as long as it's dry and the temperature doesn't get below 20 degrees or so at night it should be fine. Hope this helps.

If power failure occurs will freezer turn back on by itself?

Yes it will. There's no on/off switch--when it's plugged in it will run, provided there's electrical current to power it. The only thing the temperature control does is change how cold the freezer stays. If your power goes out, the green light on the front goes out. When the power comes back on the light will show you it's running. Frozen food should stay frozen nearly a week without power, provided you don't open the door.
