Can I use this interchangeably between windows vista and windows 8.1?

I want to back up all my files from an old PC with Windows Vista into this external hard drive. Will I be able to pull out the files using a new laptop with a Windows 8.1 readily or do I need to do any reformatting?
Unfortunately the storage transfer would have to go through to the external drive formatted specifically for one or the other...
