What's great about it: Powerful and relatively easy to use
What's not so great: To get the most out of it, you need to read the manual
I needed to replace my Onkyo receiver that produced 85 watts a channel. I was worried that the Sony would not match the Onkyo's power, even though the Sony was rated at 150 watts a channel - sometimes power ratings and how they handle your speakers are two different things. NO PROBLEM. This receiver can crank out clean power. To be clear, I am using a 5.1 environment, and the Sony has definitely upgraded the performance of my speakers.
I also wanted the AirPlay, Bluetooth and HDMI inputs - all work great and are easy to use. Setting it up was pretty easy, but as I perused the manual the other day I can see there are some settings I should tweak.
It is about as simple as you can get to operate. That said, it still means there is some complication to it. It is the nature of the beast.
The inputs and outputs are well thought out, and I could not be more pleased with my purchase.
This product has... Plenty of power for all my needs, Interfaces well with TV, Easy to use controls
About me... practical, Tech savvy
I would recommend this to a friend!

I know this comes standard with 802.11ac, but is the wireless adapter backwards compatible with 802.11b/g/n .
Absolutely. It will work fine - the data transfer speeds will be limited to the slowest component, which in this case will be your router.

audio cable

I need a cable that connects my mac to my stereo/speakers so that i can hear my music from my computer thru my speakers?
Don't know which Mac you have or the audio out jacks it might have other than the headphone jack. Best Buy has some headphone out jack cables that can connect into most receivers. If your receiver has some audio in jacks on the front, bring a picture of those to Best Buy and they should be able to help you (Radio Shack could too). Don't spend money on wildly expensive cables - unnecessary.

I have the ns-hdmi 8 insignia cable does this also send audio signal as well as video, do I still need digital optical cable

HDMI cables carry both audio and video signals. You do not need to also attached the digital optical cable.
