What's great about it: solid. attractive. thin
What's not so great: screen cover. buttons.
I bought this for my retina mini. The screen protector does not fit flush against the screen and makes using a stylus worthless. The power on/off button does not line up properly and wont' shut the ipad off or does it without pressing. I reinstalled it 4-5 times and it didn't work. Also bought the magnetic screen cover/stand for this case and it won't stay closed and keeps turning on and off the device since the magnets and fit won't allow it to stay closed. For a case you pay around a hundred bucks for, it is simply not worth it. Even more so with the 30 dollar screen cover that doesn't fit properly. Save some money and get an otterbox or another brand.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

does the case have a strap option

are there options for a strap to hang on a shoulder.
Yes it has a strap so you can carry it like a purse. It looks silly as heck but who am I to judge?

Is the case an exact fit for the iPad mini retina which is .3mm thicker?

Yes and no. The case fits properly but the screen cover is not a flush fit against the screen. It has an air bubble effect.
