I bought this computer three days ago. I noticed a large number of issues so after trying and failing to fix them I brought it back and exchanged it for a new one. The new one had the exact same issues so I'm operating under the assumption these are model problems, not issues specific to my machines.
The fan is loud. Everyone talks about the BIOS update and that does help things but when you're trying to do something heavy duty the fan spins up really loud and as it's such a small computer the sound is very shrill and wears on my nerves. On the other hand, standard operation is as quiet as you could hope for and heat on the bottom is never an issue.
This computer, as sold, is not Windows 8.1 compatible. If you follow all the updates as suggested by Sony you will end up with a machine running 8.1 that displays many windows in low res. I contacted Sony and spoke at length with them. Their only solution was not to upgrade to Windows 8.1. Tech gurus might be able to track down the software conflict responsible and resolve it but I could not.
The rubber feet on the back provide an excellent angle but make it very difficult to put the laptop into certain styles of cases/bags. The variety of bag I prefer is two padded sheets sewn into a bag for the laptop to go between. This machine will not work in that design because the feet are very large and are high friction so it will not slide into its sleeve.
The sound quality and volume are bad. The speakers on this are what I would expect to get from a $400 machine, not something in this price range.
The audio jack occasionally emits a brief but extremely irritating sound when using external speakers or headphones. Though considerably less noticeable in headphones, it still exists. Sony said is was a hardware problem and suggested I send it in to be serviced taking goodness knows how long. Again, this problem existed in both machines.
The RAM usage is horrendous. The first machine used 4.1 GB of RAM out of box with no user programs running. The second started at 3 GBs but increased to 4.1 after applying updates. The way Windows 8 handles RAM means this isn't actually a problem for casual users but for gamers like myself who need massive amounts of RAM, it's a very bad situation to be in. Sorting out what processes can be cancelled and what can't is a practice in futility as there are approximately 100 to sort through.
If you can get passed all those issues it's not a really bad machine. It's still, to date, the only one I can find with this level of portability and a half decent graphics card. The display is gorgeous, rivaling Apple's retina. The performance is solid. As desperate as I am to find another, I'll end up keeping the Vaio Flip 15 if I can't.
