What's great about it: Ease of set up and use.
What's not so great: Picture is horrible straight out of the box. Nowhere near as good as older Quattron models.
In 2011 I bought my first HDTV, a Sharp 52" Aquos Quattron model LC-52LE830U. I was blown away by the picture quality straight out of the box. Anyone who saw it commented on how much better it was than other comparable HDTV's. HD sports looked stunning! The color was so rich you could seemingly walk into the set, and it had true whites.
3 years later I decided to upgrade to a 60" Sharp Aquos model LC-60LE650U. I did a lot of research and read the favorable reviews which made me think I'd be getting the same TV I already had, just bigger. Oh how wrong I was...!
The previous one was an LCD/LED. The new one is listed as just an LED. Both are rated at 120 HZ 1080P, but there are untold significant differences in the picture quality. I installed the new TV and set it up with the same color settings as my previous model, but it is noticeably different. The colors are very untrue, yellow'ed, and you lose a lot of crispness compared to my old one. I have yet to spend the time to configure it via the customized settings recommended on CNET, but you would think the same TV would have the same appearance as its predecessor, right? The only thing I can figure is that the previous model is listed as a "Quattron" version and the new one is not. And although everything I've read by the "experts" suggests there is no noticeable difference between adding that fourth "yellow" sub-pixel color to the spectrum included in the Quattron models, it truly must have some effect on the picture quality because the non-Quattron version ironically has very impure and yellow-ish whites, and the Quattron version has very clean/pure whites.
I am running both TV's side by side to compare and analyze, and if I cannot make adjustments to match my older 52", I'll end up taking this new one back for a refund. There's a night and day difference between the two. The new one loses details such as creases in clothing, wrinkles on faces, etc. The blues on the old one are so deep you could swim in them. The blues on the new one are lighter, shallower, and somewhat white-washed. The reds on the old one are strong and defined, but on the new one they're blurred and muted. And most notable is the difference in blacks. The old Quattron has deep rich blacks, and the new Aquos is yellow-ish blacks.
One other annoyance is the new one has much more screen glare than the old one. It picks up any other light in the room and glares it like a mirror, whereas the previous model had a much better matte finish that did an excellent job in fending off outside window glare, etc.
So, for those who haven't had a "great" HDTV previously, you may be perfectly happy with this regular Aquos 60". However, if you've seen the previous LCD/LED Quattron version in the 52" or 60", you will be sorely disappointed. I certainly am...!
