What's great about it: Thin, good trackpad, good screen (except for the dead pixels)
What's not so great: Dead pixels appearing after only 2 months, the noise of the HDD (non SSD), comes with windows 8 (not 8.1)
I bought this laptop in mid-december 2013. The first hours of use was a bit of a pain as it come with windows 8, and you have to update it to windows 8.1 (took at least 2 hours with a very unintuitive process).
After that I was pretty pleased with the laptop. Very thin, good track-pad, nice screen resolution and viewing angles.
The downside came this week when dead pixels appeared in at least 3 different zones. It basically look like thin black lines of 1/4 inch particularly visible over white background.
Asus has a Zero Bright Dot (ZBD) Guarantee where they would fix dead pixels but it is only valid for 30 days after the Purchase.
It might not be a critical defect (laptop still useable) but I was expecting a much better screen reliability from Asus or at least a better repair policy.
This product is... Good sound quality, A touch pad that works great, A nice compact size

No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Is there a way to get Windows 8 removed and replaced with Windows 8.1 if purchased in store (or in general)?

yes you can update for free from windows 8 to windows 8.1 by simply going to the windows store application on your computer

Does this come with the Haswell processor?

Pretty sure this model does, but it doesn't mention it in the specs or the highlights, and I'd think this would be a selling point worth mentioning!
