If you live in an area with marginal internet speeds it will not connect to D-link cloud service, even to configure. You can config manually though once you get it on the network after waiting for all of the auto config options to fail. Needs to have a manual setup option from the start. That Zero Config option only exists if you have an entire D-link cloud router set up.
I can't yet get it to FTP images but it will do vid clips on motion. The camera has lots of features not even mentioned in documentation. There is also a PC based DVR app from D-link that will record on schedule or motion. You can set motion on the camera for the FTP images and motion in the DVR for recording separately.
The real down side is image quality. It states its VGA quality at 640 x 480 but it is obviously up-scaled from a much lower resolution. image is grainy and at 6 to 8 ft would likely not be usable in prosecution of a thief. It has its uses but not much of a security camera due to poor image. This day and age we 19 megapixel sensors in even the cheapest cell phones, but most home security cameras still suffer from low res sensors.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

does this record? do I have to connect to Ethernet/Wi-Fi/ or computer or phone?
I want something that records only when movement is detected and that I can review later. snapshots are sufficient
I also want this to either be outside and transmit via wireless to device inside
or be able to detect and record through the window

It has no internal memory to record to. It can email images on movement if on wifi or wired internet connection. It is also indoor only. You may want to look into wild game cameras made for outdoor use.

Can you add this to your computer
As in a web cam? Not sure. It is a ethernet IP based camera either by wire or by wifi and can be viewed by most browsers and by app after setup.

remote recording?
Can you use this in a cottage up north and control it on a computer at home?
If you use the cloud service to view records, then yes. You can view anywhere. I believe the phone app on android allows record but snapshots only in iPhone.
Also you can push records via FTP off site. And email still images.

does it need to be connected to a phone line and router?
I don't have WIFI is that required?
Yes, it has an ethernet port on back. Can connect wired or wireless. In fact, you have to connect it wired for setup with provided cable anyway before you can use wireless.

Is this quiet and discreet to where no one would hear it recording?
Silent. There is only a single slight click when it switches from day to night vision.

It works on its own, but had no internal memory to record. Relies on cloud service or DVR app on a PC to record.

When it's records. Can the person robbing your home keep you from seeing it? Can they delete information?
Can I look up my recording on line?
It does not record on camera. Use the paid service and you get cloud storage OR use D-linkcam DVR app on a PC.

Can you see at night thru a window with this camera?
It has night illumination. BUT the reflection from the glass may cause trouble. It did for me.

why i can't resgiter to my d-link account?
Why I can't register my d-link account?
If you have a slow internet connection, it wont register. Try to take it to another house or work and set it up and manually put your wifi info in after you register by running wizard again.
