I don't understand what you mean by safe however this router will work as a replacement for another older one and it has basic security features that come with most routers.

I have an Ethernet connection, wireless connection, and no modem. Can we boost the wireless with this router?

You can boost the connection if you connect this router using an ethernet cord. If you want to extend the wireless without a cable you will have to purchase a repeater.

Is this compatible with century link?

If the century link modem connects to your computer using an ethernet cable you can use this router.

Can the wireless functions be disabled to use only a wired connection?

The wireless functions can typically be disabled on Netgear devices. I don't know the specifics of this router. However if you just need to use a wired connection you might want to look into purchasing a managed or unmanaged switch instead of a router. Managed switches allow you to control advanced routing features and unmanaged switches just connect all of the devices without the ability to use advanced features.

If I buy this, do I need to buy another modem? If so, what is the best match if I am planning to use it for Comcast Xfinity?

Best Answer

No. Any wireless router can be connected to your Xfinity Modem to expand your networks functionality. There is a port on the router, which is clearly marked, that is used for the internet. You just need to plug a cat6 ethernet cable into a jack on the modem an into the internet port on the router then attach the router to your computer and follow the instructions. If you don't have a cat6 cable or are not sure what that is (it is stamped on the outside of the cable) you can still use any other cable, such as the one that comes with the router, that will fit but it may lose some speed if the cable is too long.

Can I use a Magic Jack VOIP phone with this?

Yes. It still requires an active internet connection and if the Magic Jack is usb it will have to be plugged into a computer and not the modem. If the Magic Jack has an ethernet port it can be plugged directly into the router.

Will this unit work with fiber optic DSL I have CenturyLink and service is the fastest but there router goes down on a monthly basis and can't reach the other rooms in my house.

As long as it has a standard ethernet port it will work with the modem. However it might not fix the intermittent connection. If you want to replace the modem entirely this will not work.
