It's McAfee slowing everything down! Otherwise OK.

What's great about it: Fantastic HP Support. Cheap. Fast enough when extra RAM installed
What's not so great: It ain't fast. McAfee software bogs computer down.
My 2005 XPS-400 finally gave up the ghost so I needed a new computer. I don't work from home anymore and don't game so I just needed a simple box for internet, email and Netflix/Hulu streaming. Those of you complaining that the computer is slow when doing CAD or other intensive applications are silly for buying this computer in the first place.
It does everything I need (one at a time) just fine. I see many complaints that the computer is slow. It is, but if you want fast go spend more money. However, I notice that when the computer is "bogged down," a quick check of the Task Manager shows that it is the pre-installed McAfee anitvirus that is hogging the computer's CPU time. And this thing doesn't have a lot of CPU to spare!. So I will be getting rid of McAfee (never liked it anyway) when it expires.
Aside from McAfee, the thing runs like it should. Getting started with Windows 8.1 was very easy and I'm learning it. (Was a loyal XP user to the bitter end). I disliked the chiclet keyboard, but am very happy to simply use my old one. The boxy super cheap mouse works fine.
I hit a small snag installing an extra 4 GB RAM. When first installed, the system would see the ram, but not use it, putting the entire extra stick in "Hardware Reserved." I tried tweaking system settings to no avail. Finally called HP support and they were amazing. They did the thing where the tech, Sanjay, takes over the computer. We finally tried switching the RAM Slots the Stock and New RAM were in and the dang thing worked and the computer is now using the additional RAM. He still suspected a bad RAM slot and sent me a package to return the computer for service at no charge if it stops working. Top notch tech support.
So, if you want a cheap computer, buy this one. Replace McAfee with something that doesn't hog resources as much and you will be fine.
Thanks.

whats the difference in hard drive size between 500GB and 1TB?

I was wondering how much more space a 1TB has compared to 500GB? I'm not good at computors but I like the reviews of the 1TBs more so I guess that would make it better than 500GB. I'm thinking of buying the 6GB memory-1TB hard drive in the HP Pavilion Slimline but need to know more about it. I also need to know where the opening for the CD & DVD drives are? Are they on top or are they hidden in front sideways?
One TB is twice the capacity of 500 GB. I just transferred my music and photo collections to this PC and still have over 360 GB left. Whether you need the space depends on how much music, video, and photos you want to put on the computer.

The single CD/DVD drive is in the front - top/left if the computer is up on an edge with "Pavilion" reading left to right.
