You can buy something cheaper, you can buy something with greater sound but for my needs this is just about right. Simple to operate with good sound. Bose products always cost more but we have found Bose products to be of excellent quality and engineering.
I wanted something simple to operate so anyone in the family or guests can use it. We have tried home theater in the past and found it more work than it was worth. Sure it's great for that special movie on Blue Ray but for day to day TV watching it was a pain.
The Bose Solo was really simple to hook up to our Sony Bravia 40" TV. I used the optical cable which is delicate to connect. Aligning the cable properly is something you need to be sure before you force it in. The instructions show the proper alignment for the Bose, my TV instructions did not and the alignment was opposite. Hook up took minutes. All sound (Fios TV, DVD, AppleTV) runs through the TV to the Bose Solo which makes the setup simple.
The sound is a vast improvement over the TV speakers and just fine for our living room. My quality test was the D-Day beach landing in Saving Private Ryan. Awesome.
The unit is very clean looking with only a single green light indicating power on. It would be nice to know the volume level but I am ok with that. The unit does power off 15 minutes after it stops receiving an input signal. A good thing for the units life and an inconvenience for me. I need to keep the little Bose remote nearby to power up sound. I am reluctant to program my Verizon Fios TV remote for the Bose and don't want to spend the $30 for the Bose Universal remote only to find out that my FIOS DVR and On Demand won't work. Maybe I will velcro attach my Bose remote to my Fios remote.
In store pick up was not an option. Delivery was very fast but the Bose Solo is shipped in the Bose Solo box. Not something you want sitting on your front door step for too long.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Compatibility with other devices

If the Bost Solo is connected to my TV, will it also work when I am operating my DVD player and video game consoles that are hooked up to my television?
Mine does. All my sound from any AV input comes from the TV audio out to the Bose Solo.

Using the TV remote to control the volume

If I use the remote on my TV to turn up the sound, will that turn up the sound on the Bose? Or do I need to use the remote with the Bose unit?
Bose recommends that you disable your internal TV speakers to prevent echoing. The TV remote will not change the volume. Unless you program your TV remote to operate a Bose unit, you can only change the volume with the Bose remote.

too much base.

Can anything be done to drop the base. The sound quality is great but the pounding base drives me crazy.
Page 20 of the manual explains how it is done. Kind of silly but....

On the Bose remote:
Press and hold the mute button until the following happens:
the system mutes the audio and plays 3 descending tones and the status indicator flashes amber 3 times. Release the mute button.

Do this again and the bass is returned to normal.
