Received this item as a Christmas gift to replace our old tuner which was not 5.1 surround. We already had 5 home theater system speakers installed. Installation was easy as I just hooked up our speakers to the DVD player. The component video cable input didn't seem to work, so I used HDMI (which is better anyway). The rear speakers didn't seem to work at first when I played a CD. I tested each speaker prior to installation so this proved the DVD player was the cause. I read thru the manual and found I needed do the following: 1) Turn on Surround sound, it came preloaded with Stereo which does not activate the rear speakers. 2) Set the Rear Speakers louder via the LEVEL button and up/down arrow buttons to raise lower the volume. This feature allows you raise/lower the volume for each speaker until the desired sound is found. At this point, the rear speakers were still not working, but I think the above 2 things are necessary. Frustrated, I called the support line and it directed me to the www.rcaav.com site. Then on the site, I couldn't find this model home theater system on the site, but did manage to find a similar model that had FAQ that addressed the issue of rear speakers not working. The site said, that all not DVD/CD's have the 5.1 channel sound and therefore the rear speakers may not work. I tried a newer DVD and found that the rear speakers did in fact work. After all of this, I am finally happy with the system, but it did take some tinkering to get it to work. I hope RCA reads my review and attempts to make the above issues I attempted to describe easier to address. For the price, it is doing what I wanted it to do. I hope my review is helpful to others that may experience the same issues.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Rca cables? What are they?

Are RCA cables the red & white for audio & yellow for video?
If this is correct, nobody is stating this for poor customers
having problems. What about a HDMI cable would that
be for audio & video?
RCA cables are the red/white/yellow. Yellow is video and red/white and audio. These are the second most basic form of A/V cables behind the single TV cable. The next best in my opinion is the Component Video cables - which has 5 wires. Two for sound - red and white and 3 for video - red, green and blue. HDMI and Optical cables are the best in my opinion. Hope this helps.
