We really enjoyed using this camera, but it decided not to turn on anymore. It started when the image turned pink with a green line down the left side. We thought it was an issue with the lcd/view finder, but when taking a picture it recorded the same image. Within a couple of days the camera became unresponsive. Since the camera is out of warranty I took it apart. Looks like there is an issue with the design of the arm that connects the lcd screen, but still doesn't explain why the image recorded the way it did, and why it died. There are certainly some design issues. I think we are done with Sony products for a while, especially after getting burned on this camera that was hardly used. Hundreds down the drain.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Uploading photos and video to MacBook Pro
What is involved in uploading photos and videos from the Sony HX300 to a MacBook Pro? I can't buy this camera unless the uploading process is smooth and easy.
There is a usb mini plug, like with most cameras, and the camera saves to sd card. So, should work without issues.

Can you turn the flash off if desired and can you also force the flash to be on?
You can turn the flash off, but cannot turn it on with this model.

Japan or China?
Made in China, like everything else.

Is a remote or cable shutter release available for the Sony - DSC-HX300
No, there is not, but you can use the timer. A remote would be much more handy.

Is there a Viewfinder?
Specs say no, but it looks like there's one above the LCD screen?
Yes, there is a view finder. There is a button next to the view finder that will allow you to turn it on or off in order to use the lcd.

Is it good for outdoors? Mountains, water and zoom in on wildlife?
Great zoom, and the pictures turned out excellent. There is also a color enhancement features that can add a lot of richness to your photos. Not sure about the water. I would avoid Any moisture.

Can you hook up this camera to tv via HDMI cable and play videos?
Yes, but will need to use a cable with an hdmi mini on one side.
