What's great about it: Snappy response when surfing net,watching vids, and installing programs
What's not so great: beyond playing facebook games, the pc needs a graphics card.
I am a freelance gfx/logo designer, it works fine if you want to use most of photshops or illustrators features. It canNot handle 3D or vid rendering. Just add a graphics card and all that will change. Serious gamers only need a gfx card to make this desktop work.

Does this computer work with a DMI monitor port?

I am currently using the VGA port on my Dell S2340M monitor. It also has a DMI port (no HDMI port). Does this computer work with a DMI port?
Get a VGA to DVI (not DMI) dongle.

I have a Gateway monitor. Am I wrong to assume that I can hook it up to the Dell?

Can I keep my old monitor and keyboard and just replace my hard drive?

I have a Dell 8200 Desktop pro, I don't use the computer for work anymore, just for research , searching for products, hotels, jazz shows, flights etc. listen to music sometime, nothing too serious. I don't need a top of the line computer for what i do, can you advise me on what direction i should be looking in.

MY HP DESKTOP THAT I BOUGHT AT BEST BUY A FEW YEARS AGO -- THE HARD DRIVE STOP SPINNING WHEN I MOVED IT FROM THE FLOOR TO A TOP SHELF--WHAT WENT WRONG

Try the HDD in other pcs that fit the connection, and and then use a HDD that you know works on the same pcs. If the (bad) HDD ends up working on one of those other pcs, then it is not the HDD, maybe the motherboard. If the HDD does not work in other pcs that you know have working HDDs then the drive is bad. GeekSquad may be able to save the data, but the drive is now in need of replacing.

Can I Install Windows 7 on this computer

Yes, I have installed windows 7 on dinosaurs > windows XP pcs with half a GB of RAM. 1GB of RAM and a decent dual core processor will run windows 7. Even less will handle it, but not very friendly experience on the net or anything else.
