Sound reproduction for radio & CD is decent; bass & treble adjust should have greater range, though. One drawback is that the clock is set to display for only 8 seconds at a time. When the system is off it's just a black box on your shelf, without so much as the time of day displayed. Second drawback is that the speaker cables, which come terminated in connectors, are pretty short so you may need to splice in additional wire to optimize the separation on bookshelves.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Can you add speakers

Are there connections available for extra speakers, such as outdoor speakers, to add in addition to the speakers that come with it?
No, there are no provisions to add speakers beyond the 2 that come with the system (and their pre-terminated cables are pretty short so you may need to splice additional wire to extend their separation on bookshelves).
