Old self cleaning ovens would have a lever to slide over & lock the oven shut. You would then start the cycle and it would reach a very high temp and last for 3 to 5 hrs. This would turn the grime to a powder that could be easily wiped off. But you had to wait untill it had cooled down & the auto lock had released the door. The newer self clean use a cup or two of water on the botton of the oven. close the door, push aqua clean (or what ever it is called) and the oven heats up to about 200 deg. & steams the oven. If you read the comments from many owners who have used this feature, it does not work very well or not at all.
