I really struggled with whether to get an AC router or save some $$, since my newer MacBook Pro is wireless AC compatible. My cheap side prevailed, and I primarily needed the ethernet features of the router to network an old printer (HP laserjet 4 plus). Besides, I plug the laptop into ethernet at my desk. After letting the enclosed installation CD do ALL of the work, I still expected relatively slow wireless throughput. I used speedtest.net to discover that I was getting EXACTLY THE SAME speed down and up (around 90mbps down, 12mbps up) with my Xfinity internet and Surfboard 6141 cable modem as I got without the router installed! And when I disconnected the ethernet and ran just the wireless-n wifi, I was getting ALMOST as fast with about 2% speed loss on the download at 88/12. Then I realized that for me, an AC router would have produced no benefit because it can't run faster than ethernet. What I didn't know is that Linksys includes an excellent remote application (free through their website) which lets you reach the network and use an attached USB drive as an FTP server. I am VERY happy with this purchase, and until XFINITY service exceeds 100mbps in my area, I have no reason to get a faster router.
I would recommend this to a friend!

what is the difference between a dsl and a ehthernet connection

DSL, or Digital Subscriber Line, is provided by your phone company and needs to be converted to an Ethernet signal through a DSL modem/gateway. Ethernet runs over Cat5 cable and is used for wired networking inside of your house or business. You can't plug a DSL line into your computer or printer, but you can plug an Ethernet line into them.
