I was really hoping that this would be the best hand held vac ever. It is however pretty weak. It does not pick up anything but the smallest specks of dust and using the attachment makes the suctioning power gone altogether. I am still looking for a great handivac. I would have returned this product, but I could not since best buy has such a short window of time to use something, try it out, discover that it's not good and return. It is the shortest window of time I have ever experienced with any retail store.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Can sand be vacuumed with this?

No, it will not vacuum up sand. It is a very low power, weak hand held vacuum.
